Double Column Machining Centers

Heaviest of them all! And we mean it. Johnford double column (DMC) and sliding double column (SDMC) machining centers not only outweigh the competition, they outperform them too! Best of all, they won't break the bank.

Molds, dies, aerospace, automotive, whatever - if it is big and/or heavy these are the perfect machines for the job. These machines start with rock solid cast iron construction. The massive cast iron bases, the huge columns, the mammoth bridges, the giant ballscrews, and the enormous headstocks all make these machines an unbelievable value. Our 90 degree bridge with offset Y axis ways has more distance across the ways and a wider saddle than any of our competitors! Heavy castings absorb the tremendous amount of torque generated by high horsepower two speed geared spindle drives (high speed integral spindles are also available). Box ways in the Y and Z axes give these machines superior cutting rigidity while the superior load carrying capacity of linear ways on the X axis allows for the accurate machining of work pieces up to 44,000 lbs. on the moving table machines.

Our DMC moving table machines are now offered in four distinct series. The DMC 900 through 3100 machines are our small to medium frame series offering Y travels of 36" on the DMC 900 through 1500 and 43" (51" opt.) Y travel on the 1600 through 3100 models. The DMC-2100S through 4100P are our medium to large frame series offering Y travels of 70" on the "S" models and 90" on the "P" models. Our super duty series includes the super heavy built DMC-3000 and DMC-4000 with Y travels of 70" or 110" depending on the model selected. While we have many standard models, we will custom build almost any size machine. If you don't see what you need, please inquire.

The DMC series machines outshine comparable C-frame machine by having superior ergonomics, superior chip removal, superior accuracy and superior rigidity. Plus they take less floor space. And you can have all of this at a price less than most conventional VMC's. All Johnford bridge mills are loaded with features that others call options. Features such as complete chip removal systems, large capacity arm type tool changers, full enclosures, geared heads, and spindle coolers. Powerful and reliable Fanuc controls are standard equipment.

The SDMC series machines, with X travels up to 480", feature a stationary table / moving column design. The table load capacity is unlimited. All machines larger than the DMC-3000 x 1500 are now available with either the full 5 axis contouring head or the five face heads as options. While these machines come in standard versions, they can be built to order with special functions and travel sizes.
